How Long Does It Take To Learn?
Everyone is different and before seeing someone drive it is impossible to predict how many lessons it will take. You’ll always have that one person who swears they passed first time after only 3 lessons, but that is far from average. The practical driving test is a lot more demanding than it used to be, this is to cope with the increasing volume of traffic on the roads today.
According to the DVSA it now takes on average 45 hours of lessons, plus 22 hours of private practice.
My aim is to get you through your test in as few lessons as possible without cutting corners, equipping you with the skills for safe driving for life. I appreciate learning to drive can be expensive which is why every minute spent in my car is dedicated to getting you test ready. This is why the average number of lessons my learners take to pass their test is lower than the national average ranging between 20-30 hours tuition. This is from absolute beginner to passing their test.
First Lesson
Most people are Nervous before their first driving lesson and understandably so. Learning to drive is a big step, you will meet your driving instructor for the first time and worry that you might do something wrong.
Let me put your mind at ease, you will make mistakes and lots of them and that’s why I’m here, I will teach you something and we will practice it and learn from those mistakes, I will calmly explain and demonstrate to get the best out of you, you will learn so much from mistakes to make you a better driver.
On the first lesson I will drive us to somewhere quiet, a big empty car park or a road that has very little traffic.
First of all we will get you comfortable in the drivers seat and go through what we call “the cockpit drill” this is positioning the seat in the right position for you, I’ll show you how to set the mirrors and putting your seatbelt on, basically everything you would do before starting the car.
Once we’ve completed the cockpit drill we will chat about the controls, what they do and how best to use them, you may already have an idea but I want to make sure you are familiar with the basic controls before you start to move the car.

You will drive the car on the first lesson but I will be giving you all the help you need, either by instruction or using my dual controls or both. You will be perfectly safe as I will be in control at all times. If you already have some experience I will have a chat with you at the beginning of the lesson as soon as I pick you up and I’ll drive us to an area that suits the level of your skills.
